      <image:title>HUMANS - The Skeptic, 24"x30," oil on panel, 2016</image:title>
<image:caption>I want to convey the necessary role that doubt and questions play in having faith - whether we’re putting that faith in God, ourselves, another person, an idea, an organization, or a government. Faith and doubt get pitted against one another as competing dichotomies, when really, I have found them to be more like conjoined twins. The presence of either doesn’t have to stop us from moving forward. Our doubts can help us define our faith, not keep us from it.</image:caption>

      <image:title>HUMANS - The Dignitary, 48"x60," oil on canvas, 2016</image:title>
<image:caption>The next time you’re in a tense confrontation, I hope you’ll think of The Dignitary. Here we have a VERY important person, staring at us with righteous indignation. I mean, how COULD we? Quite intimidating. And yet, somehow he has failed to notice the crayons in his nose, the shortcomings of his argument, the flaws in his own character. But we, of course, are the one in the wrong. Whether The Dignitary is us, our boss, our colleague, our spouse...it never hurts to step back, notice the crayons and have a laugh about it.</image:caption>

      <image:title>HUMANS - The Oracle, 48"x60," oil on canvas, 2016</image:title>
<image:caption>We all need a little of The Oracle in our lives and in ourselves. The Oracle is a truth-teller. She can look at a situation and discern what’s really happening. She knows when to speak, when to listen (and mostly, it’s listening). She’s not afraid of her own honesty. She’s not here to impose it on you, either. Mostly, she watches. We’re dying to know what she’s thinking. And if we’re ready to hear it, she will share.</image:caption>

      <image:title>HUMANS - "The Hero," 48"x72," oil on canvas, 2016</image:title>
<image:caption>I find the most interesting heroes are complex and imperfect. In The Hero, I want to capture that conflict, that struggle of becoming who we want to be…but not quite arriving. It can be an exciting, maddening journey - getting glimpses of your highest self one moment and falling short the next. We tend to see ourselves as the heroes of our own stories. Assessing the challenge we’re facing right now - how we feel about it, how we’re getting through it - makes for meaningful conversation and reflection.</image:caption>

      <image:title>HUMANS - The Witness, 30"x30," oil on panel, 2016</image:title>
<image:caption>Ah, to witness. It is a privilege and a burden. We’re often not ready for it. We may not know what to do with what we’ve seen, what we feel. Acknowledging anger is really difficult for me. I often don’t realize I’m angry until I’m really, really angry. And even then, I forget how closely anger is connected to fear. And how quickly it can turn into bitterness. The people who impress me most are those who have been a Witness - to death, suffering, destruction, loss - and have made a space for those feelings inside themselves without it becoming all of themselves.</image:caption>

      <image:title>ANIMALS - The Fool, 48"x60", oil on canvas</image:title>
<image:caption>I wanted to play on both meanings of “fool” - a court jester and someone who has been deceived. If you’ve ever been betrayed, lied to or discovered the edges of your own ignorance, you know how painful and exposing it feels to have been “blind” or even blindsided. While the situation may be awful, I hope you still see the model as beautiful. Though she feels disgraced, she is still worthy of love. It takes tremendous courage to walk through unlovely circumstances and look at oneself and insist, “I’m lovely.”</image:caption>

      <image:title>ANIMALS - The Pessimist, 72"x48," oil on canvas, 2016</image:title>
<image:caption>The Pessimist reminds me to think about what I’m thinking about. This pig - a royal pig, no less - has the wrong reference point. It’s fixated on an uncertainty, something out of its control, i.e. will my fears come true? And consequently setting itself up for a distorted, miserable view of its life. I’ve found that sometimes, the only difference between feeling great about something and feeling miserable about it is the detail on which I choose to fixate.</image:caption>

      <image:title>ANIMALS - The Worshippers, 48"x72", oil on canvas</image:title>
<image:caption>Admiration. Devotion. Reverence.Unlike groveling or obsession, worship of a worthy being creates health and joy in the worshipper. So much joy, in fact, I believe we would clone ourselves three times over to be able to enjoy the object of our worship even more...which is why our “worshipper” is actually the same dog, three times! In making this piece, I kept asking myself: What or whom do I worship?Am I better because of it? It’s one of those questions worth sitting down with a big lollipop and lick-lick-licking until I find an answer.</image:caption>

      <image:title>ANIMALS - The Overachiever, 48"x60", oil on canvas</image:title>
<image:caption>The word ‘overachiever’ has become a badge of honor in our competitive society. We put ‘overachieving’ on a pedestal without considering the darker side of what it really breeds within a person, within our culture. Overachievers often carry many quiet burdens - perfectionism, isolation, pride, self-loathing, discontent, intense fear of failure. It took me years to realize being an ‘overachiever’ wasn’t always worth what it cost. Funny story: the gentleman at the hardware store who cut the chain that I used in photographing reference material for this piece jokingly asked, ‘Is this for your Chihuahua?’</image:caption>

      <image:title>ANIMALS - The Martyr, 48"x60," oil on canvas, 2016</image:title>
<image:caption>One detail I hope viewers will notice in The Martyr is that whomever is shooting the bow and arrow is a terrible shot. I mean, look at that target! There are holes scattered everywhere! Even the apple is sweating - not a good sign, right? And yet, our darling subject is unmoved. We all ‘martyr’ ourselves for something, don’t we? A job, a relationship, a goal. We sacrifice, we put ourselves out there, we throw our resources on the line…and hope for the best. And hopefully, as we mature, we get better at picking those things, we choose things that are worthy of our lives and devotion.</image:caption>
